Striving for self: What's the point?

There's a degree of selfishness to almost every action you make, be it: waking up and going to work, making your house look nice, going to the gym or, saving your hard-earned money for a rainy day. Just about every person is trying to make their life more comfortable, make themselves more popular or make themselves ultimately happier, and there's nothing wrong with it.

What's the point?Based on that, at what point does the desire to bear and rear children come in?

Overlooking any kind of biological trickery your body is playing on you (also known as The Affliction), from a rational and logical standpoint it makes no sense to have kids. This conclusion is based on the current economic and social situation in the world along with your standard reasoning for having children.

Economic Reasoning
From a purely financial standpoint, having kids is very costly.

Not including post-secondary education a single-parent family will pay approximately (on average) 185,000 dollars and 181,000 dollars for a dual parent family to raise a child, as of 2001 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Overall this is a risky investment, if only purely a financial one.

The more people have children, the more stress on the system, the higher the cost of raising a kid within it and, the riskier the investment the parent(s) are making. Average people don't make over 50,000 dollars a year, and this is before taxation without the consideration of the cost to keep themselves fed, clothed and housed.

Loud kids in the supermarket can be annoying!Social Situation
There's plenty of reasons people actually decide to have kids, but none of them seem rational.

A lot of the people choose so "because everyone else is doing it", which is easily brushed away as mindless behavior. Others tend to think they need to have kids because "they're at that point in their life", which is, again, mindless thinking almost equal to faith-based reasoning. Anything considered as "keeping up with the Joneses" should be brushed away as idiotic (this can be applied to any situation lacking critical thinking or analysis).

Some might be unfortunate enough to have a kid(s) by accident. That sentence is succinct, therefore needing no further explanation.

At the time of this writing, there are roughly 6.76 billion people on the planet. Do you think: Earth needs another human to sustain, or that you are special in some way, or raising a child will be easy with this much strife found in society? With so many factors pressing against a newborn forging its way towards adulthood, the prospect of any kind of promising future for a child decreases greatly.
