It would be the job of a lifetime – as in, no retirement from slavery for the rest of what could only loosely be called a life.
How did I get wrangled into such a terrible mess? I went to university, landed a great position at a well-known and very well-paying software company, and even had time for mentally stimulating hobbies.
When I wasn’t furthering my career, I was furthering my perspective by traveling Europe’s swankiest hot spots and leading a life of leisure and lushery. I was 28, toned, great looking and seemed to have the world on a string. But was it enough?
A great deal of former classmates, especially from high school, seemed to start applying for and even accepting positions at a workplace that had never even crossed my mind previously. They seemed to also love working for their boss, even posting photos and entire albums of this new workplace and events involving the boss onto their blogs and social networking pages.
Maybe this is what should be the next step for me as well, I thought. I was always up for a challenge and trying to fulfill my life.
Soon enough, after being bombarded from all sides by acquaintances, friends and family members who were somehow affiliated with this new job, I even convinced my partner to consider the job change with me. My partner at the time was the CFO of a Fortune 500 company and had spent his energy making it to the top, investing in all kinds of ventures, and accompanying me in exploring all the delights that upper-class life had to offer for two young go-getters.
